Survivalist


Wrestling with twigs,

Striving, above all,

     For austerity in step,

     To make my presence felt lightly.


Rustling the limbs,

With windlessness,

     Sincere and willowed,

     Palmed, perhaps pining.


Leaving the path,

Sagebrush underfoot,

     Overtrodden, wayward,

     Counting, not picking:

     Berries among briars.
