Resting—transitioning—from

From hero to icon,

From leading to having led:

Peacefully, sweetly:

In state. 

Crossing—reflecting—on

Having to having had, 

An icon of past,

On leaders and leadership:

Imperfect, human:

On state. 

Product of times past,

Linker of moments:

Iconic warrior:

World War,

Cold War,

Culture War,

Just War,

Restrained War,

Son’s War,

Undeclared Civil War.

Maker of times now.

Knowing—connecting—this,

Giving to still giving,

Icons from ideas:

Contradictions from ideals:

Reticent taxer, son of:

Our state. 

Wishing—faith-praying—for

Loving with more love,

Optimists’ icons,

For a kinder, gentler us:

Millions, points of light:

Nation.
