Impostors In the City

Impostors In the City

With little fanfare, breaching protocols
Mostly understood with experience—Practicing—
I arrived  again on this island, again a stranger.

Walk this way to here.

Talk this way: limp and strut: swagger:
                        Cross-wise and interrupted.
Don’t prolong eye contact
Unless you want to become friends
Or be cussed out—or begged of: or scammed:
Or made love to.

                        Here then nowhere.
                        Here then everywhere.

The rules, they change: wait now, go now.
Recollecting remnants into portals—Reshaping—
Incremental and gridded, upon bedrocks.

Walk this way to here.

Choose your words: benign silence: linger.
                        Cross-docked in fulfillments.
Observe with strangers’ eyes,
Engage when engaged then retreat
Amongst souls—on streets and sky-touching—
Borough on, love.

                        Everywhere, then there
                        Nowhere, then there.

Impostoring, fake-making: storied then,
Gathering up a temple to the mind—Reposting—
Webs and tangents and loops, pretended.

Walk this way to here.

Make word: engage joyful noise: wander:
                        Crosstown and subterranean.
Forget and see anew,
Gather docents and poets and words
Alongside other impostors—other fake-makers:
Love-pensioned, free.
